Public Transport in Florence
Florence has no subway, but instead a dense network of buses and trams. The bus network serves the entire city (including small electric buses in the old town), while two modern tram lines (T1 and T2) connect the suburbs and the airport to the city center. Buses and trams use the same tickets.
Practical Use
- Buy tickets: You can get tickets before your journey at ticket machines (at tram stations and major bus stops), in tobacco shops (tabacchi), kiosks, cafés, or at the ticket counter at the main train station. You can also buy a mobile ticket via smartphone using the AT Bus app. Alternatively, when boarding, hold your credit card or smartphone up to the reader to purchase a contactless ticket. A single ticket costs €1.70 and is valid for 90 minutes from validation for unlimited trips (bus & tram).
- Validate tickets: When boarding, you must validate your ticket. Insert the paper ticket into the yellow validator; activate mobile tickets in advance in the app. With contactless card payment, validation is not required. Transfers: Within the 90 minutes, you can transfer as often as you like. If traveling with a credit card, hold it up to the reader again with each transfer (you won't be charged twice).
Timetable and Public Transport App
Operating hours: Buses run approximately from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM (Sun from about 8:30 AM); some lines operate Thu-Sat even until 2:00 AM. Trams run daily approximately 5:00 AM-12:30 AM, on Fri and Sat until 1:45 AM. The AT Bus app provides current timetable information with route planner, live departures, and ticket purchase. The app is available free for Android and iOS.
